Taking Care of Power Equipment and Carrying On in Stormy Weather

Power loss incidents, which amount in USA to $80 billion annually, cause tremendous damages to computers and data, in industry, communication and data centers.Power failures are markedly related to season, occurring mainly due to transformer failures, standby generator starting troubles and underground cable malfunctions, all victims of poor maintenance that could be avoided.

Forty two major worldwide Power Failure reported incidents were analyzed by UPSonNet. All occurred during February 2009, each affecting thousands up to hundreds of thousands people. The study results indicate that most failures are due to defective equipment that failed in Stormy Weather. Proper preventive maintenance could have eliminated most defects and the associated power failures.

Normally, during the dry period, contamination which includes electrically conductive materials is collected on power line insulators. Rains and storms close the electric path causing shorts and arcs, tripping line breakers. Sometimes utility poles catch fire due to the electric arcs.

Salt is used in some areas as part of winter road treatment, increasing the amount of contamination spread by road vehicles kicking up salt from the roadway. This creates more potential for electric arcs near freeways and major roads.

Trees are also a leading cause of power failures in winter. Winds and snow cause trees to fall. The falling trees cut power lines. Some power lines create electric shorts and arcs between adjacent power lines or from power lines to ground.

Lack of rain may affect power supply in places where considerable amount of power is generated by hydropower. Kathmandu is now seeing severe power cuts, with no rain in the past few months and decreasing water level in rivers feeding the hydropower plants.

Excessive heat, as experienced in Australia in February, overloads electricity supply due to tremendous growth in air conditioning, thus tripping line breakers.

Natural causes reported as air contamination, trees, ice, no rain, as well as any incident reported as transmission line failure, which may or may not refer to natural causes, form together only thirty five percents of total power loss incidents. Defective equipment is responsible for forty six percent of power loss incidents and is the main reason for power losses. Seven percent of outages occurred due to automotive accidents. The reason of additional twelve percent is unclear.

Although most installations are equipped with Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) systems, no single UPS or its battery failure was reported. In some cases the power failure occurred after depletion of UPS batteries.

Till late eighties, year by year, the arrival of first autumn storm was accompanied by collapsing of defective UPS systems and particularly worn out backup batteries. No UPS Company had enough staff, or enough batteries to deal with all irate calls from customers. The chaos stopped when microprocessor based UPS control was introduced in early nineties, enabling automatic testing of UPS systems including batteries, by performing periodic power outage simulation exercises. The exercising enabled detection of defective systems, correction of the UPS and replacement of defective and weak batteries. All these preventive actions were performed when mains power was still available, before the stormy weather season.

Equipment malfunction diagnosis indicates that nature is not to be blamed. Similarly to the described initial experience with UPS sytems, most of the studied power equipment, which failed during storms was revealed to be already defective, and couldn't perform within its designed limits. Lightning and switching voltages generated in the grid are generally attenuated and clamped to the insulation levels of line isolators and surge protective devices. Healthy transformers and cables should be able to withstand these voltage levels, and backup generators should start when needed.

Performance of proper preventive maintenance can solve most of power failure problems. Simple, cost effective monitors based on technologies such as Partial Discharge (PD) and Infrared tomography are able to detect transformer defects, and allow scheduling corrective actions in time. Power outage simulation exercising can reveal generator's starting problems. PD methods, Power Factor measurements, as well as other monitoring methods, offered by test instruments manufacturers, can alarm before the stormy season, about defective underground cables, which require treatment.

UPSonNet study reveals that most power outages occur in stormy season, mainly because of defective equipment, which fails in harsh environment. Such outages, do not happen due to acts of God but due to negligence of humans, and can be avoided by proper maintenance service. Regular maintenance schedule, exercising and monitoring can foresee possible problems, which can be solved before the storms come.

LESSONS FROM THE SCHOOL OF POWER

A lot of Christians are getting tired of weak Christianity they have and as such they have been asking questions on how they could make progress from their present level. They ask how they could obtain power. Therefore, the focus of this message is to supply answers to these questions, which have been the concern of most believers today, since almost everyone knows full well from the word of God, that Christianity is a religion of power. There is something within the subconscious minds of believers challenging them about whether they possess this power in their lives now. That is why this message is entitled, “Lessons from the school of power” We will look at the lessons in seven perspectives. Therefore I counsel you to read with maximum concentration so that you could get the best from this message.

The first lesson is in the form of question: what is power?
Truly, power is derived from spiritual sources. Before anything could take place in the physical, some actions must have been taken place in the spiritual realm. When this occurs, nobody has any power to change the situation. Sometimes ago, when l was in England, I received a letter from the prison and I wondered who could write to me from there. But when I opened the envelope I was shocked to discover that somebody whom I expected to have been in Nigeria by that time was the writer. In his letter, he said “Dear Daniel, I wish to inform you that I am now in prison. Please pay me a visit and when you are coming buy some apples, toothpaste and other necessary things for me. It is now I know that I should have listened to all the things you used to tell me instead of laughing and making mockery of you” Truly, he used to laugh at me and call me names those days when I preached to him. So I went to see him at the prison. After passing through a rigorous prison protocol, I got to where he was and when he saw me, he broke down in tears lamenting that if he had listened to my words at that time, he would not have been clamped into jail. But funny enough, he had become born again and started preaching to other inmates. What offence did he commit? He issues cheque for the money he did not have, but nemesis caught up with him. I asked him if he was guilty and he said yes and asked the Lord to forgive him. He knelt down and asked for forgiveness. Thereafter, we transferred the case to heaven as he had repented. When he was charged to court, those of us who understood that the real power source is from the spiritual just laughed. On the judgement day, the presiding magistrate said, “As an educated and intelligent person with distinction in Master degree to your credit, I can only come to one conclusion about you, I think you are mad. Therefore, I hereby order that you should be deported”. That was exactly what we had decreed and prayed for. This is to tell you that true power does not belong here, it is from above.

At another instance, a six-year-old girl confessed in a revival programme that she was the one who bewitched her father’s hand. She said the reason he could not stretch the hand was they used it to cut firewood in their witchcraft meetings. Her father almost ran mad. If the six-year-old girl was asked to engage in a physical combat with her father of about forty, he would probably have broken her bones into pieces but he girl was stronger spiritually because that is the power base.

In this light, we can say that power is the process of control given by God through the spoken words that cause things to happen. It is capable of producing an effect that is the spiritual ability to accomplish things. However, one of the problems of Christianity today is that power is fading out and this sad development first started from individual believers.

Lessons No 2 what are the sources of power?
Power emanates from three sources namely: God, Satan and man. The divine power of God is the positive one, satanic power is negative whilst the human power is neutral. It can either be controlled by God’s own divine power or satanic power. We are only able to bind the evil and spoil his works by the power of Christ; otherwise we are no matches for the devil.

Lessons No 3 is the difference between authority and power.
People mix these two things up whereas they are two different things. As far as Christians are concerned, their authority comes from the word of God whilst their power comes from the anointing of the Holy Spirit. Many Christians have given commands to evil spirits by quoting scriptures but lack of good knowledge of where these scriptures are written have spelt defeat for them. This is the reason Bible study must be taken seriously. Many are still joking with their Bibles. If they are asked to open to any book, they will begin to fumble with their Bibles, looking for index, pages, numbers etc. You must be diligent with your Bible study.

Our authority as believers is exercised in the name of Jesus and the anointing of the Holy Spirit operates power. That is why you see two different levels of operation between two Christians. One can issue a command to an evil spirit in a person and the evil spirit leaves immediately. Whereas another Christian could use exactly the same words but the spirit would say, “You are not serious” So the difference lies on the power backing up the command. Authority is given to all Christian without measures, but power is given according to your level of self-crucifixion and faith. The moment a person gets born again, authority is automatically conferred on him. For it to move, the power of God must back it up. In other words, authority is the legal right of Christian, which you should claim and exercise. It is power that enforces your right as a Christian. It is possible to have authority without power and that can spell disaster. This is telling us the reason that the Holy Spirit is an indispensable factor in our Christian life. It is certain that no witch whether from the bottom of hell fire can kill you if you have the genuine baptism of the Holy Spirit.

Lesson no 4: What is our matching order from the Lord Jesus?
Knowing full well that we are soldiers of Christ John 14:12 “Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also; and greater works than these shall he do; because I go unto my Father”.

Just like the armed forces, Christian soldiers have their own matching order too. Matthew 10:8 “Heal the sick, cleanse the lepers, raise the dead, cast out devils: freely ye have received, freely give”.

Our marching order is clearly spelt out here. It says, “Heal the sick, cleanse the lepers, raise the dead and cast out the devils. As you continue to grow in your Christian life, if you fail to carry out any of these before you go and meet the Lord, you would have lived a powerless Christian life. What does the Lord expect us to be doing practically? How does the Lord want us to carry out our marching order? Should we just be hiding from our enemies? No. The Lord expects us to be creating headache for our enemies, but it is unfortunate to see that the enemies are oppressing believers instead. I used to have some troublesome friends in those days. I mean troublesome as Christian warriors and not as hooligans. One day at a night vigil, they prayed the following prayer points, “ Let all satanic transport services grind to a halt in the name of Jesus.” As they were praying violently, all of a sudden, a nicely dressed handsome young man landed on the floor and was saying, “What brought me down, what am l doing here?” And they told him without mincing words that he had been brought down by the power of the Holy Spirit backing up their prayers. I know some believers who dare not attend night vigils or pray fire prayer simply because the Christian marching order is not clear to them.

Research Report of Chinese Nuclear Power Industry, 2009

The energy demands and energy saving & emission reduction are the double pressures for the fast development of Chinese economy. The nuclear power, however, is the most competitive solution to change Chinese energy structures and meet the energy demands.

By the end of 2008, total 11 nuclear power generating sets had been in operation with the total installed capacity of 9.07 million kilowatts, accounting for 1.3% of the total installed power capacity. The annual nuclear power production was 68.394 billion KWh, accounting for 2% of the total power production in the country.

The nuclear power production in 19 countries all over the world accounts for more than 25% of the total power production, including 76.8% in France, 19.4% in America and 27.5% in Japan.

Compared with the thermal power, the nuclear power in China still has no price competitiveness. On the one hand, it attributes to the comparatively low price of the coal. The statistics shows that the investments in the thermal power are about 4 thousand Yuan (580 USD) per kilowatt, but it needs 10 thousand Yuan (1.46 thousand USD) per kilowatt for the nuclear power, 6 thousand Yuan (880 USD) differences. On the other hand, it spends more time on constructing the nuclear power, which takes about 70 months, but the thermal power takes about 30 months. The expense of the nuclear power and the low exploitation costs and economical usage of the coal resources lead to long-term dependency of Chinese energy system on the thermal power.

It needs to realize the production in large scale so as to cut down the costs of the nuclear power. The performance of the nuclear power equipments is 30 years’ longer than that of thermal power equipments and the cost composition makes it competitive in the later period. The investments in the nuclear power fixed assets costs 50 to 60 percent of the total investments or higher, but the thermal power only accounts for 30 to 40 percent. The nuclear fuels cost 20% of the total investments, which is 50% or higher for the thermal power. Meanwhile, for the operation costs, the nuclear power occupies 15% of the total costs, but 10% for the thermal power. Because of the giant fuel costs of the thermal power, the costs of the nuclear power are comparative low after depreciation allowance.

Meanwhile, there is no definite direction for the technical route choice of Chinese nuclear power, which is also an important factor affecting the nuclear power construction process in China. The present nuclear power technologies in China, including French technologies in Dayawan nuclear power plant, Russian technologies in Tianwan nuclear power plant and Canadian technologies in the third phase of Qinshan nuclear power plant, have not formed standard systems for far. The time and costs spent on the nuclear power technologies and the achievements in China are far behind those in France, Japan and South Korea.

Performance of Combined Power System With Design of Energy Storage Controller System

Abstract -We investigated a small isolated hybrid power system that used two types of power generation; wind turbine and diesel generation. The interaction of diesel generation, the wind turbine, and the local load is complicated because both the load and the wind turbine fluctuate during the day. These fluctuations create imbalances in power distribution (energy sources are not equal to energy sinks) that can affect the frequency and the voltage in the power system. The addition of energy storage will help balance the distribution of power in the power network. For this paper, we studied the interaction among hybrid power system components and the relative size of the components. We also show how the contribution of wind energy affects the entire power system and distribution and the role of energy storage under the transient conditions caused by load changes and wind turbine startups.

Index Terms - wind turbine, diesel generator, hybrid power system, renewable energy, energy storage.

I. INTRODUCTION

Windmills were used to pump water and mill grain, along with many other uses [1, 2, 3, 4].

Today, wind turbines are used for similar purposes (i.e., water or oil pumping, battery charging, and utility generation). One important aspect of wind turbine applications, especially in an industrial environment, is that wind turbines generate electricity without creating pollution. Wind turbines are also well suited for generating electricity in isolated places with no connections to the utility grid [2,3,4]. However, in isolated applications, especially very small applications, the power system components (sources and loads) are limited, and the system networks are weak in many cases. Thus, any changes in the power input or output of one component may affect the rest of the system more dramatically than in a larger system where the smoothing effect of many components benefits the overall system. In this paper, we analyze a hybrid power system consisting of a wind turbine, a diesel generator, a local load, and energy storage. We also present the impact of energy storage on the power system performance. The results and conclusions of this analysis apply to similar hybrid power systems.

II. SYSTEM CONFIGURATION

The system has two types of generation: the diesel generator and the wind turbine generator (Figure 1). The

energy storage can act as a load or as a generator depending on the need. The diesel generator provides smooth output power, whereas the output power of a wind turbine depends on the wind velocity. As the wind velocity varies, so does is the power generation. For example, if the wind speed changes very smoothly, the output power of the wind turbine will also change very smoothly. On the other hand, wind turbulence causes the output power to fluctuate. Figure 1 is a single line diagram that represents the analyzed power system. The wind turbine has an induction generator with a capacity ranging from 40 kW to 225 kW. At low wind speeds, the generator operates at 900 rpm with a rated capacity of 40 kW. At high wind speeds, the generator speed is 1,200 rpm with a rated capacity of 225 kW. We used 150 kW of energy storage as a buffer to operate as a load or a source depending on the need. This paper discusses only fixed-speed wind turbine generation and does not cover variable-speed wind turbine generation [5]. The diesel engine, which has a rated capacity of 400 kW, is operated in parallel with the wind turbine to supply the load. The local loads are mostly residential and light loads. Other loads include water pumps, compressors, and heavy equipment. An 80-kW water pump represents the transient condition of a heavy load.

The Touch of Aromatherapy Power

One of the most frequently asked questions I hear from my clients is, “What made you leave your career in Nursing and start your own practice?”

The earlier part of my nursing career was spent in Australia in high dependency primary care and later in medical/oncology and palliative care. Illness surrounded me and death was more common than not. Disempowerment was augmented by a system resistant to change and it was not much longer til light soon shone in a new direction physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually.

I travelled overseas and whilst nursing at a private hospital in Surrey (U.K), took up further studies in Aromatherapy. The Medical Consultants there were very open to alternative complimentary therapies and permitted me to use this therapy in the ward where I worked. This was a positive beginning and the improvements in the patients’ physical and overall wellbeing was most impressive.

One particular patient I recall in her 50’s was a regular on the ward in and out of remission diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis. She had symptoms of pitting oedema (chronic fluid retention), immunosuppression and immobility to name just a few. Before treatment she was only able to transfer from wheel chair to bed. Following two aromatherapy massages using a blend of essential oils with Juniper essential oil, her diuresis increased quite dramatically. As she had been in a wheel chair at home for many months a little joint release for her arms was required to relieve stiffness and restricted movement. She was soon able to walk with a frame; some thing she hadn’t done for a long time. Her spirits were lifted giving her new hope and motivation.

When I returned home to Australia my newly acquired skills were greeted with much less enthusiasm from the more conservative M.D. colleagues (their comments termed them, “hocus pocus”). I brushed aside their scepticism and used essential oils in subtle ways such as Lavender or Roman Chamomile essential oil bed baths and placed a few drops in a small fan on the bedside table for the terminally ill. I included oils such as Cypress, Clary sage and Melissa for the grieving families to restore comfort and peace. It wasn’t long before I began my own private practice and furthered my studies in Kinesiology & Emotional Healing.

Aromatherapy and the Power of Scent

The power of scent can create such a dynamic response within the individual. Such is my own Aromatherapy initiation back in my late teens when I visited a natural beauty therapist who used Aromatherapy skincare products. I can distinctly recall how deeply relaxed and calm I felt following the Lavender essential oil facial steam. That experience has stayed with me long after days gone by. It's familiarity stays indelibly highlighted as …'my first professional facial'…ahh!

Of course there are certain scents that trigger not so pleasant memories. As an Aromatherapist, choosing oils for individuals is a combination of knowledge and intuition. I want the person to have a pleasant if not euphoric experience when they are enjoying an aromatherapy massage. Choosing the oils therefore requires me to gather information on an energetic level. The individual may present with a physical complaint but more often than not this is simply masking stress which ultimately comes from emotional dysfunction. It’s not what happens to you in life but how you react. The difference between understanding this and denying it is simply awareness.

I also utilise the use of body language, reflexology and the emotional connection related to specific meridians. The result of this analysis guides me to determine, therefore, whether the oils need to be physically stimulating, or more subtle and grounding in their effect. Otherwise a relaxing or rejuvenating blend to bring back balance and harmony is often the order of the day.

Combining intuitive wisdom with Aromatherapy therefore is very grounding creating outcome with purpose. The treatment can thereby be designed to continue at home using the required oils in the bath, diffuser or in a moisturiser etc. To create that subtle effect on the emotions the quality of the essential oil is paramount. An essential oil that is adulterated in any way will not give you the desired effect as the nature vibration of the oil has been distorted. I chose to distribute Essenza Pura Aromatherapy Products knowing that not only have the oils been sourced from selected suppliers and rigorously tested but ultimately it is the discerning nose that does not compromise on the true power of scent!
